The Collections Management Training Program Online provides education and training in the contemporary profession of Museum Collections Management, an emerging profession originating in the U.S. Essential to the furtherance of a vibrant professional arts presence in a present-day context, its focus is a contemporary and practical approach to the care, management and presentation of art and cultural heritage, development, education and outreach. It can play an important role in the protection of cultural treasures as well as contribute to a reenergized economy through significant cultural outreach, both locally and internationally.
The Collections Management Training Program provides education and training in the contemporary profession of Museum Collections Management, an emerging profession originating in the U.S. Essential to the furtherance of a vibrant professional arts presence in a present-day context, its focus is a contemporary and practical approach to the care, management and presentation of art and cultural heritage, development, education and outreach. It can play an important role in the protection of cultural treasures as well as contribute to a reenergized economy through significant cultural outreach, both locally and internationally.
Lead by Fionn Zarubica, an expert in Costume and Textile Collections Management from the United States, the sixteen-week program is divided into four modules and provides basic and advanced instruction in state of the art and sustainable collections care. Topics include preventive conservation, registration methods, secure art handling, packing, storing, transportation, inventive exhibition planning, mount making, installation and de-installation and public outreach.
After completing the four online modules, participants will be prepared to help meet the growing demand for skilled professionals to work with collections in museums, archives, and private and corporate collections internationally.
Session I will address core issues on how to care for one’s own collections within an institution. It will examine how a society determines what is of value and worth preserving, and provide an overview of the museum profession, including differentiating types of collections and museums. It will address registration methods and essential collections management concepts, principles and techniques.
Session II will focus on working with objects. It will address basic handling to assure object safety, materials and techniques for the housing of cultural property, storage and the storage environment, integrated pest management, object preparation, moving objects within the museum, finding creative solutions to storage methods using local resources, accessioning, documentation and labeling. The session also will begin to take a look at risk management as well as protecting the health and safety of museum staff and visitors.
Sessions III and IV will present progressed studies in collections management including exhibition arts, incoming and outgoing loans of significant cultural materials, museum ethics, effective use of resources, best practices, sustainability and contemporary business etiquette.
Participants will look at how museums can encourage and support community growth and stability by promoting national and local cultures, education, scholarship, civic awareness and tourism; and the ways in which American museums are sustained through community efforts, donor support, and volunteer recruitment and training.

Do I Need A Particular Level of Degree From A University To Participate?
- No. This is a professional development program and a university degree is not required.
Do I Need To Have Studied Conservation Or Art History To Participate?
- No. We are looking for participants with a genuine interest in the field of Collections Management and in learning the skills associated with it
Do I Need To Be Able To Speak English?
- Yes. Museums internationally communicate in English and it is a required skill.
How Do I Earn The Collections Management Certificate of Completion?
- Satisfactorily complete all three sessions
How Long Is The Program?
- The program is six weeks, divided into three separate sessions.
Can I Take The Sessions In Any Order?
- The sessions need to be taken in order, as each session’s curriculum builds on the next
How Many Sessions Are In The Program?
- There are three sessions
What If I am Interested In Taking Only One Session?
- The three sessions must be taken in order and the only session that is open for enrollment without previous participation is Session I
Can I Attend Only Selected Lectures?
- Attendence and participation in all lectures and classroom activities is required
What If I Complete Session I (one) And Then Cannot Continue? Can I Take The Other Sessions Later Or Do I Have To Start Over?
- The sessions must be taken in order, but can be taken within two consecutive years.
What Kind Of Daily Assignments Are There?
- There will be daily assignments. These will include reading, essays on program topics and class presentations and online forum discussions
- There will be small projects assigned between the sessions
- Discussions on the program topics and assignments will be held daily in the classroom and intermittently in the online forum
How Will I Be Graded?
- There are no grades for any of the sessions. However, we reserve the right to ask a student to withdraw if that student is not able to keep up with the program and/or the program expectations
Do I Need To Purchase Any Textbooks?
- No, hard to find reading materials will be provided and there will be recommended reading lists made available
How Much Time Can I Expect To Spend Outside of the Classroom On Assignments Each Week?
- Plan on spending approximately 5-10 hours per week for reading (online and off-line), engaging in assigned tasks and/or writing, and preparing class presentations
- Actual time will vary from person to person due to language facility, research, reading and writing speed
How Often Will I Be Expected Attend?
- Daily and punctual attendance is required
- Absences must be agreed upon in advance

- Participation is defined as
